To the batch of 2022, congratulations on getting accepted into one of the finest universities in Pakistan. You are just a few days away before you start experiencing the best four years of your academic career. Life at LUMS is full of opportunities. Cashing in the right opportunity at the right time can help you grow exponentially, so stay active and search for the opportunities in which you are interested in.
When I came to LUMS, I was excited to begin a new chapter in my life but was confused at the same time. Excited about the new challenges but confused about my decision of choosing LUMS over the other options. This decision turned out to be the best decision I could have possibly made. Getting out of your comfort zone and going beyond teaches you the essential skills of life. Meeting newer people with broader perspectives and making good friends will help you create amazing memories in LUMS.
I am an intellectually curious Accounting and Finance major with a minor in Economics. Having always been more interested in numerical subjects as opposed to other subjects, accountancy had always been the logical path. With two chartered accountants in my family, I was exposed to this field of study far before I was able to take my first accounting class in college. Moreover, doing a couple of internships in the Accounting and Audit departments gave me a proper insight into this field. Also, after dabbling in some Economics courses at LUMS, I found that I like Economics enough to minor in it, but I was looking for something more corporate-oriented for my major. Hence, the exposure obtained from the internships gave me the confidence to pursue Accounting and Finance.
The best thing that I like about LUMS is that it is not rigid when it comes to the courses selection. No matter what field you are majoring in; you can take courses from any other field. This system promotes diversity in your skill set. Hence, my advice to the batch of 2022 would be to come to LUMS with an open mind. Don’t just restrict yourself to a certain field. Take diverse courses in your first two semesters, so that you can take a rational decision about which area of study to pick at the end of your first year.
Suggestion: Do at least 3 of these: 1) Go on a semester exchange. 2) Open a startup. 3) Score a 4.0 at least once during your four years. 4) Join a society and stick with it!
